NEAR RECORD THIN LUNAR CRESCENT

In Canberra, Australia on Saturday 17 April 1999 from 08h 21m (UT) the Moon was captured as a Thin Lunar Crescent (or TLC). As New moon was at 16d 4 h 22m, this TLC was aged 27 hours 59 minutes.


The previously recorded "youngest" TLC was aged 14 hours 45 minutes as seen in the United Kingdom on July 22, 1895 (Observatory, 34, 374, 1911 ) as reported by Joseph Ashbrook, August 1971, in Sky & Telescope pages 78-79.
