OBSERVER 11 : SANTOS GERALDO

Geraldo's timings were submitted by Sergio Lomonaco Carvalho of CARJ - Clube de Astronomia do Rio de Janerio. at email: lomonaco@centroin.com.br.

Geraldo reported timings observed with a Masutov instrument of 70 mm aperture, at f/13.8 using a lunar filter. The sky was completely clear with a weak breeze but clouds covered the moon by the end of totality.

His timings were reported only to the nearest minute in universal time.

OBSERVER 12 : RIPERO JOSE

Jose observed from longitude 3 d 28' 19" West, latitude 40 d 27' 30" North at an observatory elevation of 586 meters. He estimated the darkness of the eclipse at between 2.5 and 3.0 on Danjon's Scale and a not very dark eclipse, of yellowish colour, with a dark shadow in the umbra and a yellow ring along the edges of the moon. The Danjon estimate was made with his Zeiss finder of 11 X 60.

He also timed 8 stellar disappearances and two reappearances during the period 2h 19m 36s to 3h 43m 14s, but these are yet to be reduced.

For the crater timings, Jose used a 34 cm Dobsonian telescope at f/4.5 and a Nagler 12 mm eyepice with timing from NGC Mini-Max.

He also observed comet Tabur (96 Q1), at a magnitude of 5.5 showing a round coma of 0.5 degrees width and with a remarkable green colour at the foot of Geminis near the star eta Geminorum (Mebsuta). About 30 minutes later he noted that the comet had moved by 0.5 degrees.

He also briefly observed Saturn with its eight satellites and the Orion nebula.

Nomenclature used:

where FEATURE is the primary contact of the moon with the umbra or the crater observed

TYPE is either PRIMARY contact or:

1 C = first contact of the umbra with the leading rim of the crater timed

2 C = second contact of the umbra with the following rim of the crater timed

3 C = third contact of the umbra with the leading rim of the crater timed

4 C = first contact of the umbra with the following rim of the crater timed

MID = contact with the umbra with the middle peak or center of the crater timed.

TIME(UT) is the contact time observed, here given in hours.minutes seconds.

Rc = the computed theoretical radius of the umbra from the timing

Ro = the computed observed radius of the umbra (using the Earth's Geoid oblateness of F = 1/298.26) from the crater timing

Ro - Rc is the difference between the observed and theoretical umbral radii

E% is the percent umbral enlargement from the crater timing = (Ro - Rc) / Rc * 100 %

PSI is the position angle of the timed feature on the umbra, from N through E, with N + ve and S - ve.

X is the computed X coordinate of the feature timed, the center of the moon is the origin and the radius (semi-diameter) of the Moon = 1

Y is the computed Y coordinate of the feature timed, the center of the moon is the origin and the radius (semi-diameter) of the Moon = 1

R is the computed radius of the feature timed with the radius (semi-diameter) of the Moon = 1.

F is the Earth's Geoid oblateness

FM is the expected geometric umbral oblateness (due to Meeus) for this eclipse.

The computations were made using MicroSoft QuickBASIC computer codes prepared by the author.
